Thrill seekers, get ready - Universal Destinations & Experiences has taken a major step forward in bringing its long-rumored U.K. theme park to life! The company has officially submitted a request for planning permission to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) for what could become Universal Studios Great Britain—an all-new resort destination set to redefine theme park entertainment in the region.

In a public letter, Universal confirmed the submission was made via a Special Development Order (SDO) which is a fast-track planning route for large-scale projects. The application includes key documents like an Environmental Statement, Planning Statement, and Design and Access Statement. The government will later invite public feedback on these materials as part of the review process.

While the official name and themed lands are still under wraps, Universal described the resort as a “world-class entertainment complex” featuring a theme park with multiple immersive lands, on-site hotels, and a variety of dining, shopping, and entertainment experiences.

The project—set to be built in Bedford, England - is being pitched as a game-changer for the UK economy, with nearly £50 billion in projected economic impact and 28,000 new jobs, most of them sourced locally from Bedford, Central Bedfordshire, Luton, and Milton Keynes. Major transportation upgrades are also planned, including an expanded Wixams railway station and improved road access.

Universal first confirmed the project in April 2025, with an eye toward opening the gates in 2031. Construction is expected to begin in next year.

Though Universal hasn’t confirmed any attractions yet, rumors are flying - a and they’re big. Fans are buzzing about possible lands themed to James Bond, Paddington, and even The Lord of the Rings. Plus, Universal recently trademarked Halloween Horror Nights in the UK, sparking speculation that the iconic fright fest could be coming across the pond.

With an estimated 8.5 million visitors expected in its first year, Universal Studios Great Britain could soon become a must-visit destination for theme park lovers worldwide.
